Serbia Press media in Serbia in October mostly conducting campaign “for” Constitution
Beta, November 8, 2006 Press media in Serbia
in October were mostly conducting campaign for Constitution, and less dealing
with objectively reporting, said Gordana Susa, the Press Council’s commentator.
Representing the Council’s report at press conference in Belgrade,
Susa said that
media “were well paid by the Government for this campaign”.
October was a month of a great violation of ethical standards in media with
articulated and almost uniformed, banalised message - "enemies of Serbia, Albanian
separatists, ustashas, corruptible, homos and dikes are against the new
Constitution", she accentuated.
According to her words, instead of respecting the voters` rights on competent
option, based on complete information, the collective, political propaganda
predominated.
At the end of referendum campaign (October 17-28), seven daily press published
403 texts related to the Constitution and referendum, of which 71 percent were
published on front pages, and this fast indicates that this was one of the most
significant social topics of the month, stated the Council’s researcher,
Mirjana Milosevic.
According to her words, news and reports dominated, and the uttermost
percentage of texts initiated by redaction were published in "Danas" and
"Politika" daily press.
Researcher of the Social Sciences Institute, Jovanka Matic, said that media are
obligated to inform citizens on all the options and to give equal chances for
introduction to different stands protagonists.
Matic accentuated that the media, during the referendum campaign, favoured the
interests of the political group that interceded the Constitution adoption and
not the citizens` interest that should be the foremost.
The group referring boycott got much less space and attention than others.
Public Service, Radio television Serbia used the same impact tactics
on the constituents as those that were used during Slobodan Milosevic’s reign, she
said, adding that RTS` reporting looked like it was a state project.
In the report of the Press Council of Media Centre it is stated that in October
the professional ethic has been most often violated by "Kurir" - 37 times,
"Press" - 27 and "Večernje novosti" - 22 times.
Half less contempt of professional rules are noticed in "Glas
javnosti" - 13 times, "Blic" - 10, "Politika" – 7
times and "Danas" - twice.
